Using Flax Seed over other unpronounceable supplements

When it comes to my horses, I try to stay as natural as possible. I don’t want Phil and the minis hopped up on drugs and  supplements that I don’t know the name of. I have used Apple A before only in the summer when the horses are in heavy work because they need the electrolytes but other than that, I avoid unnatural supplements.

When I got Phil, I knew he would need some sort of supplement because he was an off track standardbred and his joints more than likely ached when in work. I looked into it for a while so I didn’t choose the wrong thing but the one thing that always came up time and time again was Flax seed and flax seed oil. So I looked into it further and eventually purchased a jug of it.

What I learned is that Flax seed contains Omega 3 fatty acids that help reduce the chances of laminitis, it boosts their immune system, and helps reduce inflammation. For more information, please click this link and check out the blog that convinced me to use Flax Seed in my horse’s daily diet.

Phil gets about 5 or 6 ounces of the flax seed oil throughout his day between his morning and night feed. Within the first week I noticed a difference. His coat sparkled and shined. He was softer than a kitten and he wasn’t so stiff in the hind end. It appeared that the flax was a miracle worker. I haven’t had any poor results and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

If you have any other natural remedies and suggestions, feel free to comment them. I’m always looking for new ideas and methods.

  1. Horses can also get Omega 3s from marine oil, slightly different nutritional profile but just as good (or some studies suggest better) for horses. I feed mine both whole flax seeds and fish oil.
Another natural supplement is Aloe Vera juice for ulcer prevention. My endurance horses get a cup a day and it keeps their stomachs happy.
(BTW – Standardbreds are my favorite! I have two of them, one just came off the track a month ago. They are the best!)
